About HIN Decoder Tool
HIN Decoder Tool was created to give recreational boaters, marine surveyors, used boat buyers, and dealers a fast, reliable, and 100% free tool to verify boat hull identification numbers and check federal safety recall notices.
Why We Built This Tool
For years, checking a boat hull number online meant either navigating clunky 1990s government directories or getting trapped behind predatory $30 paywalls that refuse to share basic manufacturer information without a credit card. We believe basic vessel safety data, legal manufacturer registrations, and federal safety recall records should be openly accessible to everyone on the water.
Where Our Maritime Data Comes From
All data displayed on this website is sourced directly from public domain records published by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Boating Safety Division under Title 33 of the Code of Federal Regulations (33 CFR Part 181). Our database includes:
- Over 16,000 registered Manufacturer Identification Codes (MICs) spanning active and historical boat builders.
- Official USCG Boating Safety recall campaigns detailing safety defects, affected boat models, and factory remedies.
- Standardized decoding logic covering the Current Format (1984 to present), Model Year Format (1972 to 1984), and Straight Year Format (1972 to 1984).
Privacy by Design
Your search queries remain private. The core HIN validation and format parsing run directly inside your web browser. We do not sell your search queries to marketing lead brokers or vessel tracking registries.
